DIY – Half Wine Barrel Beverage Tub, adding wheels

06/25/2014 By frugelegance@aol.com 2 Comments

Wine Barrel Beverage Tub by FrugElegance

Bought these half barrels in Napa a few years ago & love them for outdoor parties! They are great beverage holders (cans & bottles)!

Ray, our trusted handyman, took on the project to put wheels on. Just adding wheels directly to the bottom of the barrel is not an option because the wood panels can shift & there is a lip from the metal ring around the base of the barrel. A circular piece of wood is needed to attach to the under side of the barrel.

Step 1- Measure out & mark the circle size needed.

Step 2: Cut wood, following your drawn line.

Step 3: Treat both sides of circle with a stain & water sealer.

Attach wood circle securely to bottom of barrel (with screws).

Install wheels.

*The barrel wood shrinks if the wood gets too dried out. This can cause the metal rings to fall out of place. Best to keep the wood moistened during the warmer temperatures. For that same reason, I would not recommend treating the wood, the natural look to the wood is beautiful- Enjoy it.

If you can not get actual wine half barrels, Home Depot sells Whiskey Barrel Planters that are a little smaller in size but look great too.

Perfect to use as a party beverage container or a planter. See our post: Wine Barrel Beverage Tub for your outdoor celebrations.

Thank you, I have two full size wine barrels. I need wheels on the bottom so if my landlord wants them moved to do some handy work I can. I am planting a couple trees in mine. I have no dirt where my area is., and I want tree’s. I am going to measure the inside bottom of the barrel and do as you suggest. Any idea what size wheels for that much soil. It will be heavy. And how thick the plywood? Thank you, I enjoyed reading you instructions

Hi Janet, Your project sounds wonderful. if you go to your local hardware store, they should be able to advice you too. Online, there are several types and they say the approx weight recommended. One thing that does stand out though, is it’s probably a good idea to have the kind of wheels that have a brake. Here’s a link to some from a quick search: https://amzn.to/3jG6S3O
Another idea if you need, to add an extra support to the bottom. And/or, add a metal bin that holds the soil in the barrel. I actually have that in one of mine now with veggies growing. Let us know how your trees turn out. Randi~
